Marine Chronometer

€4.900 EUR

Worn by Cousteau and Tabarly in the 1970s, this Omega with its distinctive look is a rare timepiece.

The watch was designed by an internal Omega team led by John Othenin-Girard, in collaboration with the Battelle Institute in Geneva, where he managed relations. The goal was to create a successor to the 1946 Omega Marine model and make it the most advanced nautical watch of its time.

Developed in an era when quartz technology was still futuristic, it features a revolutionary caliber that took nearly fifteen years to develop: the Megaquartz, the only wristwatch caliber ever certified as a “Marine Chronometer.” To this day, it remains the only movement to have received this prestigious distinction.

Beautifully tailored for sailors, it was released in 1974 in two limited editions of 1,000 pieces each. The first, made entirely of steel, offered slightly less precision. The second, which we present today, is more precise and Marine Chronometer-certified. It stands out with its engraved movement number on an insert located on the front of the watch and its square bezel surrounding the dial.

At launch, this watch was priced five times higher than the iconic Speedmaster. A true collector’s piece, revered by sailors, and one you are unlikely to see on many wrists.
