Il y a des Rolex compliquées.
Et puis il y a celles qui nous rappellent qu’avant de devenir la référence absolue de la montre sportive, Rolex savait aussi faire des choses franchement déraisonnables.
La référence 4768 apparaît à la fin des années 1940 et réunit dans seulement 35 mm un chronographe et un triple calendrier : jour et mois dans deux guichets sous midi, date indiquée par une aiguille centrale et chronographe à trois compteurs.

Étrangement, aucune impression de surcharge.
C’est probablement ce qui rend cette montre aussi fascinante. Le cadran reste parfaitement équilibré, avec ses aiguilles dauphine, son échelle périphérique bleue et ses trois compteurs disposés avec une élégance presque architecturale.
La 4768 occupe également une place particulière dans la famille des Dato-Compax : contrairement aux références Oyster qui lui succéderont, elle possède un fond clipsé. C’est la seule version non-Oyster de cette extraordinaire lignée de chronographes calendaires Rolex.
Et puis il y a l’or rose.
Déjà produite en très faibles quantités, la 4768 devient particulièrement séduisante dans cette configuration. L’or apporte juste ce qu’il faut de chaleur au cadran argenté sans enlever quoi que ce soit à son caractère sportif.
Les collectionneurs regroupent aujourd’hui ces Rolex sous le surnom « Jean-Claude Killy », en hommage au triple champion olympique, ambassadeur historique de la marque et homme dont l’élégance semblait rendre parfaitement raisonnable l’idée de porter un chronographe triple calendrier en or rose.
Ce qui est déjà un talent en soi.
Une Rolex de 35 mm avec trois compteurs, deux guichets, une date périphérique et suffisamment d’informations pour organiser votre semaine entière.
Et pourtant, la première chose que l’on remarque reste son élégance.

There are complicated Rolex watches.
And then there are those that remind us that, long before becoming the ultimate name in sports watches, Rolex was perfectly capable of doing something rather unreasonable.
Introduced in the late 1940s, reference 4768 manages to fit a chronograph and full triple calendar into a case measuring only 35 mm: day and month displayed through twin windows beneath twelve o’clock, a central date hand, and three chronograph registers.
A great deal of information.
Strangely, not a hint of clutter.
That is perhaps what makes the watch so fascinating. The dial remains beautifully balanced, with dauphine hands, a blue peripheral scale and three registers arranged with almost architectural precision.
Reference 4768 also occupies a very particular place within the Dato-Compax family. Unlike the Oyster-cased references that followed, it features a snap-on case back, making it the only non-Oyster version in this extraordinary lineage of Rolex calendar chronographs.
And then there is the pink gold.
Already produced in very limited numbers, the 4768 becomes particularly seductive in this configuration. The warmth of the gold works beautifully against the silvered dial without taking anything away from the watch’s surprisingly sporting character.
Collectors now commonly refer to this family of watches as the “Jean-Claude Killy,” after the three-time Olympic champion, longtime Rolex ambassador and a man elegant enough to make the idea of wearing a pink-gold triple calendar chronograph seem entirely reasonable.
Which is an achievement in itself.
A 35 mm Rolex with three registers, two windows, a peripheral date and enough information to organize your entire week.
And somehow, elegance is still the first thing you notice.
